Located on the iconic beachfront of Cronulla, Solstice is a standout example of modern coastal architecture. Recently awarded the 2025 UDIA NSW Award for Excellence in Medium Density Development, this boutique collection of just 15 luxury apartments combines sculptural design with high-performance construction.
Designed by EMK Architects, the building’s defining feature is its sweeping curved façade, designed to reflect the natural movement of the ocean while maximising light, views, and visual impact.
But achieving this level of architectural precision required more than design intent. It demanded expert rendering, high-performance materials, and a collaborative approach from start to finish.
Get Plastered Australia is a Sydney-based, family-run business known for delivering high-end finishes across residential and commercial projects.
Founded by a father-and-son team, the business has built a reputation for:
- Premium external and internal rendering
- Acrylic render systems and textured finishes
- Bespoke applications including Venetian plaster, Marmorino, and Otsumigaki
- Precision workmanship for architecturally designed builds
Their focus is simple, quality workmanship that enhances and protects the structure long-term.

Rendering Complex Curved Facades
One of the most technically demanding aspects of the Solstice project was its extensive use of curved formwork concrete. Unlike flat surfaces, curves require extreme precision, any inconsistency becomes immediately visible once rendered.
To achieve the desired architectural outcome, the builder invested in custom rubber moulds to form perfectly consistent curves across all levels of the building.
“The formwork was second to none. The curves had to be perfect and they were,” says Jerry Barros, Director from Get Plastered Australia.
However, even with high-quality formwork, the final finish depended on expert rendering application.
“Our job was to come in and make the formwork look perfect and make sure it lasts.”
The Rendering System: Built for Coastal Durability
With over 2,000 square metres of surface area, the project required a rendering system that delivered both aesthetic appeal and long-term durability in a harsh oceanfront environment.
Specified Application System
To achieve this, the team followed a carefully developed system:
- Rockcote High Adhesion Primer for strong substrate bonding
- Rockcote Quick Render Non-Combustible application for compliance and performance
- Rockcote Texprime Primer to provide a uniform surface and promote optimal adhesion of the texture finish
- Rockcote Coloured Render Sandcote texture finish for durability and visual consistency
- Two coats of Rockcote Armour High Performance Membrane Paint for long-term protection

This wasn’t just about achieving the right look, it was about building a façade system that would perform over time. When applied to specification, the Rockcote system provides a 15-year warranty, giving confidence that the finish will maintain both its integrity and appearance in a demanding oceanfront environment.
“The Rockcote Sandcote gives a modern look, but more importantly, it’s flexible and durable, perfect for a beachfront project like this. It’s designed to stand the test of time.”
The rendering works were completed over an extended project timeline, with approximately 4–5 months of active work across a broader 12-month construction program.
A dedicated team of 4–5 tradespeople worked across:
- Curved façade elements
- Slab edges and balconies
- External walls and structural features
Working with curved surfaces significantly increased the level of detail required.
“Curves are one of the hardest things to get right. There’s no room for error, but when they’re done properly, they completely transform the building and it makes this building beautiful.”

The completed Solstice development delivers a façade that is both visually striking and highly durable. The smooth, flowing curves create a dynamic exterior that interacts with natural light, enhancing the building’s coastal presence while maintaining a timeless aesthetic.
The use of Rockcote Sandcote texture further reinforces both the visual and functional performance offering a finish that is modern, resilient, and suited to oceanfront exposure.
A project of this scale and complexity requires more than just quality workmanship, it relies on the right materials, technical expertise and supply support.
Network Render & Paint played a key role in supporting the delivery of the Solstice project, providing:
- Product supply aligned to specification requirements
- Technical guidance throughout the project
- On-site support in collaboration with manufacturer representatives
- Reliable delivery to maintain project timelines
“Jack from Network Render & Paint doesn’t just sell product he understands the job. He can look at a project, make recommendations, and help you get the best outcome.”
Working alongside Rockcote representative Travis, the team ensured all products were applied correctly and met required standards.
“Having that support on-site, making sure everything is done properly, makes a big difference on a job like this.”

Why the Right Render System Matters for Coastal Projects
For architects, builders, and developers, Solstice highlights an important takeaway:
Not all render systems are equal, especially in coastal environments.
Key considerations include:
- Flexibility to accommodate structural movement
- Resistance to salt, moisture, and UV exposure
- Long-term durability and reduced maintenance
- Compatibility with non-combustible construction requirements
- Ability to achieve high-end architectural finishes
Choosing the right system and applying it correctly is critical to achieving both performance and aesthetic outcomes.
“At the end of the day, it’s about quality. If you follow the right process and use the right products, the results speak for themselves.”
